Maria Vargas is a photojournalism student at the University of North Texas's Mayborn School of Journalism with a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. As a photographer for the North Texas Daily, they document news and arts & life stories that shape communities, focusing on moments that are often overlooked.
As a queer Mexican American, their identity deeply informs the work they pursue. Their photography centers on immigration, LGBTQ+ issues, and the intersections of identity, resilience, and activism. Through both photography and video, they aim to create visual narratives that not only inform but also resonate on a personal level.
With a commitment to ethical storytelling and a passion for amplifying underrepresented voices, they strive to capture images that challenge perspectives and spark conversations. After graduating, they plan to focus on reporting on the Mexican-American border and cross-cultural storytelling, highlighting the complexities of migration, identity, and community.
